Moving Moments

My father worked for IBM, which in our household stood for “I’ve Been Moved”. The only time I ever attended a school from start to finish was in high school. The middle of my junior year, however, we moved and then my parents realized it was important to move me back.

I recently returned to the town of my high school years…after a 35 year absence and found that yes, you can go home again.

So I am sharing the poem I wrote right before my move and the addendum I just wrote upon my return…..

September 6, 1976

The moving van will be here soon

I try hard not to cry

I told my best friends not to come —

It’s so hard to say goodbye.

We all vowed that we would write,

Unaware it was a lie.

The letters will lessen, then they’ll cease —

It’s so hard to say goodbye.

Packed away are memories,

Things that made my spirit fly.

They won’t mean the same again.

It’s so hard to say goodbye.

I’m leaving friends and faces

Be brave…I have to try.

A teardrop trickles down my nose.

It’s so hard to say goodbye.

The times we laughed, the ups, the downs,

I’ll remember all, I know.

But what I dread is arriving there —

It’s harder to say hello.

The moving vans were hard to count

As thirty-five years passed swiftly by

I know my heart had hardened

Each time I said goodbye.

The past became a memory

I built up walls, I cannot lie

And yet my steps were forward

Each time I said goodbye.

When there were opportunities

I simply let them pass me by

Afraid of all those feelings

Each time I said goodbye.

And when the time had finally come

Filled with nerves and fear was I

Would anyone remember?

The time I said goodbye?

A simple smile, a familiar laugh

The twinkle of one’s eye

Made returning to friends so poignant

I didn’t want to say goodbye.

And now I know

Those years have passed

With true friends, there is no lull.

Hellos we’ve shared, not those goodbyes

Are what have made my heart so full.

  2. Really wonderful poem! My mother went to 17 different schools. I wish she were alive to enjoy your words.
